Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro announced on his show Friday that the company has signed former ESPN sports reporter Allison Williams to lead a special sports series that will be available exclusively for Daily Wire members.
As The Daily Wire previously reported, Williams left her post as a college basketball and football reporter for ESPN earlier this week after being sidelined in September for refusing to abide by the network’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate.
“The Daily Wire is one of America’s fastest-growing media companies and I am thrilled and honored to join them. I am proud to be a part of a company that fights for our rights and I cannot wait to bring agenda-free sports reporting to the Daily Wire’s members and millions of followers,” Williams said in a statement. “Leaving ESPN was one of the most difficult decisions of my career, but it was the right thing to do. I respect people who choose to get the COVID-19 vaccine, but it was not the appropriate medical decision for me at this time. No one should be forced to choose between their livelihood and the freedom to make their own health care choices—it is simply un-American.”
While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages all people, including women trying to become pregnant, to get vaccinated, Williams said that she chose to not receive it after consulting with her doctor and a fertility specialist.
“Throughout our family planning with our doctor, as well as a fertility specialist, I have decided not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at this time while my husband and I try for our second child,” Williams said. “This was a deeply difficult decision to make and it’s not something I take lightly. I understand vaccines have been essential in the effort to end this pandemic; however, taking the vaccine at this time is not in my best interest.”
“I have been denied my request for accommodation by ESPN and the Walt Disney Company, and effective next week, I will be separated from the company,” Williams added in a video statement.
“I also want people to know who support these mandates that I fight for you,” she said. “Because if this is the direction we take our country, there will come a time when the government or corporations mandate you to get something that does not align with your values. Power given is seldom returned. And when that day comes, I want you to at least know that we fought, and we tried.”
Williams was with ESPN since March 2011. At the network, she covered a wide variety of major sporting events, including multiple NCAA Final Fours, the 2021 CFB National Championship, the Rose Bowl, and the NBA Draft. She was previously with Fox Sports Florida where she covered the NHL’s Florida Panthers and the MLB’s Miami Marlins.
Shapiro noted Williams’ talent in his announcement this morning. “Allison is a massive talent. ESPN’s loss is our members’ gain,” he said.
Daily Wire co-founder and co-CEO Jeremy Boreing noted that The Daily Wire is leading the way in fighting the Biden administration’s forthcoming COVID-19 vaccine mandate for employers.
“The Biden administration continues to pressure businesses into acting as the enforcement arm of the federal government’s tyrannical vaccine regime. It’s a shame so many businesses are going along with it. We won’t,” Boreing said, referencing the Daily Wire’s plans to challenge the Biden administration’s mandate once it is made public.
When the Biden administration announced its mandate (which has yet to be implemented) that all companies with 100 or more employees must require their workers to be vaccinated or receive weekly COVID testing, the Daily Wire declared that it would not comply.
